G&L Custom Shop

I bought a G&L USA Comanche in 2014, and I liked that you could custom-order a guitar from G&L with any of their options. Now I've heard that G&L has added a 'Custom Shop' option with all their options, and they don't offer as many of their options if you don't go to their 'Custom Shop'. I'm disappointed to hear about this, as I think G&L's system provided a way to buy a custom-made guitar at a reasonable price - They would cost around what a Fender American Standard/Deluxe/Elite would cost, which was not as much as Fender's Custom Shop prices. I imagine G&L is probably charging more now for their 'Custom Shop' options. Do you think this will hurt G&L or help them?

Also, I noticed their Custom Shop options don't seem to offer all the options I remember. I ordered my Comanche with a blueburst finish, and I also seem to remember they also had a Clear Blue option. I don't see either of those as an option in their Custom Shop list:

Their list of USA guitar options doesn't even include body finish options anymore:

This is disappointing. :( For a while I've thought about buying a G&L ASAT Classic S Alnico in green burst, but it sounds like that color option might no longer be available.

Take a look at the latest Specs and Options in our Knowledgebase G&L Specifications and Options sub-forum:

Feb. 1, 2018-present Custom Shop Specifications & Options
January 25, 2018-present G&L U.S. Specifications & Options

G&L has updated their website but it is not quite finished yet. There is a separate finishes option page here: http://glguitars.com/fullerton-finishes/.

And yes, you can still order an ASAT Classic S Alnico in Greenburst.

IMO I think G&L's new Custom Shop will definitely help them.

Hope this helps.

What options are no longer available except through the custom shop. To me, the custom shop is about *more* options. You can still custom-order a normal G&L in the same way you always could.

The reason the finishes aren't listed on the options page is simply that they moved them to have their own page with pictures.

The only previous standard options which changed to Custom Shop only are these neck profiles:

Heritage ‘86 - Faithful to the early G&L years with a 1 5/8” nut width, slight edge roll, and medium taper from 0.790” at 1st fret to a 0.910” at 12th fret.
These specs were part of the #1b neck.

Modern U - Fans of Leo’s early U-shape necks often want a chunk down low but not too much at the top. While some of those early U-shape necks were
extremely thick, the Modern U offers a bit more chunk but not too much. 1 5/8” nut width, slight edge roll, mild taper from 0.850” at the 1st fret to 0.910” at the 12th fret.
These specs were part of the #1c neck.

Soft V - A gentle V-shape is heaven for some players, and this is one will delight. Mild V-shape down low which fades to almost C-shape up top.
1 5/8” nut width, slight edge roll, mild taper from 0.830” at the 1st fret to 0.960” at the 12th fret. These specs were part of the #2a neck.

Deep V - A more aggressive V-shape for those who can’t get enough V. Pronounced V-shape down low which fades to moderate V-shape up top.
1 5/8” nut width, slight edge roll, mild taper from 0.890” at the 1st fret to 0.930” at the 12th fret. These specs were part of the #1d neck.
