Re: New red G & L Ascari

A few months back I bought a new Ascari on the net because I'm a fan of the short play scale guitars and how easy the short scale necks finger play. My Gretsches and Fender Jag are prime examples, all have short scale necks and they all finger like hot butter. Being a new model I figured the new Ascari set neck would be set up from the factory, would play nice, etc. Wrong !!!! I was completely unable to set my new Ascari up where it would play easy even dropped down to 09-42s. I've been setting up my own guitars for 35 + years with zero problems but this one had me stumped. I finally had to send it back to G&L in HB, Cal and they did get it to play nice and easy even with 10's on it. What they did to it I do not know but now my Ascari finally plays like a dream. I especially like the sounds of it's humbuckers in the single coil mode, feel that sound is more user friendly for me anyhow. Finish, binding, body wood, hardware, etc., seems top grade, too. The only glitch was that it would not play for me, but once that problem got fixed, I'm really happy with it. Hope this helps ! If any questions, email Glenn at riverratgr@gmail.com

what made it difficult to play easy? action, relief, fret work? a little more info please.

I think making it play decent involved a combination of nut work, fret work and attention to the neck. I usually shoot for relief of .008"-.010" but this one refused to play, fretted out on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd frets so neck is too straight. Loosen it enough to not fret out and the action was then high and hard to finger. Lowered strings, raised strings but no help at all. Nothing that I tried would make this guitar play easy, fingered more like a slide guitar. Possibly the factory plekked it ? Guitar was returned to me in a couple of weeks with no explanation at all. The factory set the neck at .008" and it plays great. This went beyond my expertise. But glad to know that G&L will stand in back of their guitars. This is the 2nd G&L guitar that needed help to make it finger easier, it also went back to factory for warranty work. Wish I could be of more help to you on this.
