How to brighten up a Legacy Special

Wed May 30, 2018 12:57 pm

Greetings,

I've picked up, not 1...but 2 Legacy Specials in the last few months. Like the articulation of the pickups but find them dark in tone. Is there a way to brighten these babies up?

I would use the PTB controls to roll down the bass. You can also try playing with pickup height. If you must replace I suggest Seymour Duncan SSL-1 or SSL-2s (or something else with A5 magnets and fairly low output.)

EDIT: I missed that this is a 'Special' with the rail pickups, correct? In that case I would think you have a lot of choices on true or stacked single coils to get a brighter tone than the rails... But I'd still play with rolling back the bass.

Here is another resource you might try: RESOURCE: Paul's Technicalities sub-forum on bassesbyleo.com.
Since Paul was the originator of the Legacy Special, I'm sure he could help you, so check with him.
And please post the recommendations he has for you, too.

Hope this helps.

Maybe this has been answered already by Paul, but have you tried maybe changing the Volume Pot to a 500K ?
