F-100 Series II G000915

Wed Oct 16, 2013 8:00 am

I bought this from a friend in the mid-nineties. I had an SB-1 that I loved (and still love; I'll get picks up soon) and was looking for a guitar; he said that this was my guitar and that he had to sell it to me.

He gave me a great deal and I've come to love this guitar more and more as each year goes by.

Both G&L's have been my only guitars that have played punk rock basement shows, all ages shows at the KofC etc, bar shows, small tours and now church praise bands. They've been with me over half my life.

I hope my ignorance in guitar maintenance and general overall neglect has not done too much damage.

A pic of my SB-1 and me circa 1992:

Nice one.

The pickups are way too close at the strings!

Ok; good to know. I keep waiting for some down time to set it up from the youtube vids but I haven't been able to get it done yet.

I'd avoid YouTube videos when setting up a vintage G&L. If you go to the Gallery section, you can find the original factory setup instructions from 1980. I've used them enough that I go from memory now, and they've always worked like a charm for me.

There were several recent posts about pickup heights. IIRC, the general consensus has been to move all of the pickups to their lowest position, and then adjust the bridge pickup for the best sound and sustain. After you find that sweet spot, raise the neck pickup to balance it out. If I'm off target, I'm sure somebody will correct me...

By the way, that's a beautiful F-100. It's exactly like my '80 F-100. I'm not usually a fan of clear finishes over swamp ash, but the tight, straight grain of that early G&L lumber was perfect for clear lacquer.

Is that an Ovation Viper your band's guitarist was playing?

That is indeed an ovation. I'm not sure the model.
