Early Ash F-100

This F-100 deserved some better pics than what I've posted before.

I spent a little extra time trying to dial in the lighting to bring out the flame and figure.
...not always easy, but I think I'm learning bit by bit . I tried a few different things, so there might be some similar shots.

Any advice on capturing flame and quilt is appreciated. I played with the brightness/contrast.mid-tones
afterwords on a couple of the pics. I tried not to color them with those adjustments , sometimes a little shift was
unavoidable as I'm learning.

It seems like (as in audio processing ) that subtractive changes are preferable to additive .

The Ash gives the F-100 more snap and zing than others I have played ( I had a dozen or so a while back so I have a bit of a benchmark in my head for comparison) . With the ash and other choice woods on this puppy,the higher harmonics sustain longer than on the hog/maple version ( which I love too ) .
You might notice she needs a good cleaning /polish/ new strings. I've found the Martin polish works well to get the gunk off.
I'll buff it out with Virtuoso polish after I'm sure there's no more stray lemon oil from treating the fretboard.

I'm curious what products you guys use to clean and polish your axes.

After she has new strings ,mirror-like frets , and a fresh infusion of elbow grease and Virtuoso polish , I'll post some updates.

If I find any names or initials ( FV ? ...is that correct Fred ? ) I'll be sure to make sure they are pictured,shared, and well-archived.

I hope this softens the memory of me only hitting 3 out 5 LR's this week.

How do you find the pickups ? ( I've got an '80 or so F100 with mahogany body)

That's right but I doubt you'll find mine in there unless there was something ( someone ) special in store for it when we made it. But it would be nice to see who worked on it in the woodshop. The figuring on the body is great and a matching flame neck is a bonus. Look forward to seeing it cleaned up.

She does stand out tonewise from other F-100's I have or have had. The maple body blackie F-100E has that robust rock sound with a good bite...but not as much attack and definition as this Ash F-100.
The black finish on the F-100E might dampen some vibes some. The hog bodies are very soulful, but they do soak up some higher frequencies .
I'm looking forward to trying some TI power brights. The brass coating on the higher strings might round out the tone
a little , but the slight roll-off in highs always seems to sit real well in the mix...and the pickups seem to grab some highs that
aren't quite audible when playing unplugged.

I can see I'm going to have start post little soundclip vids as I work through restringing the pack ( some folks have herds,
I think mine are a bit more predotorial in character ) .

Wow! I can't believe that flame.

My '80 F-100 has the same body and fretboard woods, but only the slightest hint of flame on the headstock. The "new" El Toro has close to the same amount of flame on the body as your F-100, but the trans blue finish hides most of it under normal lighting.

I haven't found anything for the bodies yet, but I have been very happy using roasted walnut oil for the fingerboards (from the local supermarket's salad dressing aisle...the brand is "La Tourangelle", in case it matters). I keep the can of it in the refrigerator, and it's still good after about six months. It's cheap, it contains no chemical additives, and it smells great. I just rub in whatever is left on my hands, like lotion. I use rubbing alcohol (and a toothbrush if needed) to remove any finger gunk left over from the previous owner, and then rub in light coats of the walnut oil until it stops absorbing. Usually there are a couple of spots that require more coats than the rest of the board. I wipe the last of the oil off and buff with a soft cloth.

If you ever get a bottle of Alembic polish, you'll love the way it cuts through old finger gunk...and it has some polymers that buff out to a great shine with some elbow grease. It smells like bubble soap ('Magic Bubbles' to be specific, if that matters ...LOL ) .

sorry about that craig. i get a little emotional when i hear those stories.

That is a nice bit of incidental flame Elwood - the body on my Korina Jr is very similar. It shows up really well when lit "from a certain angle at a certain height" (thats a Nick Cave lyric), but capturing it with a camera is tough for an amateur such as myself.

As for cleaning, all my guitars have poly finishes so a cloth does the job very nicely - plus its free and leaves no residue

I'll try to keep my rant subjects guitar related ,

I have a hard time chiming on LRs because of cruelty and it's getting tougher to quell
those reactive thoughts.
