G7L F100 sn 000501

First G&L guitar produced. 1980 F100. SN 000501
It was shipped to me by mistake. It was never supposed to leave the factory.
Purchased in Springfield MO in 1980. A week after leaving the music store with this I received a call from 'Musicians Friend' In Springfield. They stated 'there has been an error and the guitar I had was the first one and that G&L would like it returned if possible'. I refused.

That's a helluva SNAFU, I wonder who at the factory (in 1980) was in charge of shipping.

Have you ever checked the build dates in the neck pocket? There has been some discussions about
low serial #'s, but I don't think anything lower than #509 has surfaced ...until now
Congrats on being the caretaker of #501 !!

From the pictures I cannot really discern what kind of pole pieces are on the pickups. They even seem to look like non-adjustable slug pole pieces. Is that correct?

sure doesn't look like adjustable pole pieces ...... absolutely fabulous !! ..... the value of this F100 must be way up there

wow, out of the blue! cool story and amazing guitar!
one of the "great mistakes" of the 20th century, on the part of G&L.
also, looks like one of those stripy ebony fretboards - unique!

Please do post some current front and back photos and a close up of the bridge showing the serial number. It should be G000501.
The body wood looks like mahogany and the body finish looks to be Tobacco Burst. Please add it to our G&L Registry.

I dunno, It might be a low serial number but please do look under the neck and see if there are any Dates. My 1980 F-100 E II has no serial number and Body and neck dates of Jan. 16, 1980 and April, 23, 1980









So I would be willing to bet mine was made first, Just not produced for sale. Dale had not even started his sales log book in April 1980.
