How long does it take G&L to make a guitar?

Thu Apr 11, 2013 9:41 pm

The pics from the factory thread had me hoping I'd spy my guitar being built, and that got me thinking the obvious thing: how long does it take to build one? Say a solid body with a poly finish and no unusual tricky bits.

I was told 16 weeks , possibly a little less .... I ended up buying a used ASAT classic to help the wait ... lol , I got two on order ....

I hear you on the "factory" picts , I would had been stoked to see one of mine on there .... it would be cool if they keep posting more picts overtime

I guess it takes a few days, maybe a week. ;)

But they will start building your guitar, when it's first in the queue.

But the interesting thing is, that on some of the vintage instruments there are several weeks or months between the building dates of body and neck. But, that probably weren't custom orders.
Unfortunately the at least stopped the stamps on the neck, so you won't exactly know anymore. ;)

The 16 weeks figure must be from the time of ordering. I was thinking of the time from start to the end of actual construction. I ordered my guitar on January 21. On March 7th, I got I call from my music store saying they heard from G&L re: my specs -- do I really want a #4 neck? I sure do! So I think, if G&L had my order for a month and a half and then they're calling me, they must be ready to do it, right? I worked out various timelines to estimate when it will be in my sweaty hands: a week still in the queue, a week to build it, two-and-a-half weeks to ship it, a half week to set it up and ... (waits for phone call) ... going nuts waiting!

I sent your question to Dave and here is his reply:

Hi Craig,

We can build a fairly basic instrument in as little as three weeks. Thanks!

Dave

Hi Craig,

I should point out that's not how long a customer should expect to wait for an order. We're quoting 8-12 for most things now. Rustics and Will Rays longer. Thanks!

Dave

Well, I just got my guitar yesterday, an ASAT Special. I ordered it on Jan 21, so that means I got it in 25 weeks and a few days. Waiting is never easy! I don't know how this compares to the 8-12 weeks quoted above, but I know it can take a long time for items to get through Canadian Customs.

Anyway, the guitar is awesome. I'll posts pictures soon.

What was the completion date? See the Custom Build Specification Certificate which should have been included.

Glad to hear the wait was worth it!

On April 1st, I placed an order through my local dealer (Martin Music in Memphis) for an ASAT Special -- a clear red SB w/ ebony fingerboard and #3 neck. Last week, their G&L rep told them that the guitar was in production and scheduled to be completed within the next couple of weeks. So, looks like it'll be around 18 weeks for me, if that all holds true.

(Checks) Completion date = July 2. I ordered it on Jan 21 -- 23 weeks. That reminds me, got to send in that warranty card.

BTW, what's the benefit of registering the guitar on this web site?

My ASAT Special arrived at the local dealer while I was out of town last Friday. Just picked it up today, and it is a damn fine guitar.

Doesn't really jive with the info I was given a few weeks ago, but my completion date was July 2 too. Ordered it on April 1, so just 13 weeks for me (though it took another 3 for the dealer to get it). They must have had fewer orders in the 2nd quarter, or something...

Anyway, this my first G&L -- and my first custom order guitar of any sort -- and don't think I could be happier with the purchase :happy0065:

How long does it usually take for g&l to make and ship a guitar from the tribute line? I ordered one today, a legacy but it is on back order until June! Is there any estimation for how long it will take once June comes? I'm going to be anxious about getting this guitar!

The Tribute Series instruments are built in Indonesia and then shipped by container ship to the Fullerton factory for setup and then shipped to the
G&L Dealers. My recommendation is to keep in contact with the dealer you ordered from and they might be able to give you a more firm ETA once your
guitar has been received by the G&L factory.

I know, the waiting is the hardest part. ;)

BTW, where are you located?

The waiting is going to be really hard

I am located in Connecticut

I am on the east coast and I ordered a Legacy from a Premier Dealer also on the east coast on Nov 21. My order had nothing too much out of the ordinary ( Quartersawn Modern Classic 1-11/16"maple neck with 12" radius fingerboard, body color matching painted headstock ) all other choices were the stock offering. The dealer called me on Dec 19 telling me he had the guitar. Exactly 4 weeks to the day. I love the guitar it plays like butter, so much so I thought they had shipped it with 9`s and I was getting ready to change the string to 10`s before I checked and found they are 10`s. A bit of an easier player than my American Standard Strat but to be honest, as far as fit & finish is concerned nothing really stands out as superior with the G&L over the Strat. I had wanted a personally designed Strat without going the Custom Shop route for a while and worked one up on the Fender ADE site. There they charged shipping & tax and had what I thought were fewer options so I looked here and bit. I am glad I did since I got a great player with eberythig I wanted in roughly 30 days and saved $$$.

Hope this update to and older post helps someone who may be n the fence,
Happy New Year, :D
