Can a 1994 ASAT Special have a black 3 bolt neck plate and a chrome bridge and still be original?

I'm sure someone here has the definitive answer but as far as I know, once they started with the black crinkle plates they kept using them until they switched to the four bolt design. They are a very frugal bunch of folks over there at G&L and try not to waste anything. Sometimes if it's incorrect. There is a series of guitars that have bass serial numbers (beginning with a B) because the order got messed up but they used them anyway.

It sounds legit. Neck plates went from chrome ('80-'82) to flat black ('82) to black crinkle ('82-'97). Hardtail bridges went from chrome to flat black about the same time as the neck plates, although the factory seemed to run out of chrome neck plates before some of the other parts. I've owned L-1000s from early '82 with a mix of chrome and flat black. Everything was black crinkle by the fall of '82, although I have seen flat black mixed in on very early SC-1s and SC-2s. Neck plates remained black crinkle until the change to four bolts in '97.

Chrome bridges started coming back in 1987, but both chrome and black crinkle could be found on different models up through the '90s. The ASAT Specials had chrome bridges in '94, so yes that would have been original.

Yes, see: List of Regular Production ASAT-style guitars (USA).

Hope this helps.
