I had been surfing Craigslist while away and came across this guitar that i just could not get out of my head. I ended up pulling the trigger - my wife was concerned that a was going to get my one guitar so early in the year (As per my new years resolution ) But i think you'll agree i made a good choice.
The details : A 2010 (or so) Semi-Hollow Comanche, Tobacco Burst, Natural Wood Binding, Gun Oil Neck, Locking Tuners. This guitar looks and feels like it has never been played! Of all the G&L's i have this one definitely has class She is certainly the Cadillac of the fleet.
When i get home i will update this post with a tone report (as it is my first comanche, and i will hopefully get a chance to post a video from rehearsal along with it.)

That's a real beauty Scott. Very elegant, it'd look in place behind the wheel of a Rolls Royce or that boat James Bond gets about in at the end of Casino Royale. Pure class.
So after getting the guitar home, i quickly realized that something was up with the "tobacco burst". Well it turns out it is not tobacco burst after all. I took the comanche into the local dealer to get a new nut (it had been set up for 9-46 by the previous owner) and they had just got in an ASAT classic in 2-tone sunburst. Sure enough it was the identical finish to my new comanche.
Here is a side by side comparison between Tobacco and 2-tone burst. The tobacco clearly has a reddish hue to it while the 2-tone almost has a yellow/green undertone to it.
Scott, you are right on the 2 T burst. I looked at the colors on the builder and it is hard for me to see the difference between 3 T burst and Tobacco burst.--Darwin

I believe the ASAT Special has a 3-Tone Sunburst finish.

It was ordered in 02 as tobacco burst.... here is a shot of another ASAT special that was ordered by one of the guys at the local dealer that was also ordered as tobacco burst. It was delivered 1 1/2 years ago.

my understanding of the tobacco sb is that it is very similar to the 3tsb, but the edge doesn't go all the way to black. it gets dark but some transparency remains. i agree, yours is definitely a 2tsb.
edit. i guess that would be the old school tobacco sb. the newer one is just like the 3tsb, but without the prominent red ring. so the first pic as craig suggested would be a 3tsb, the one on the left in this pic would be a tbsb.

So it's been a few weeks now with the Comanche - the honeymoon is definitely NOT over! What a beautiful sounding guitar. If i had to compare, i would say that it is a super quiet version of my s-500. The gentleman i bought it from thought that it sounded to much like a hum bucker for him and not strat enough. I think the lack of noise may have influenced his perception, because it is certainly not smooth like a hum bucker, it maintains all of the growl that is present in the s-500. I would agree that is not a typical sounding strat, but that is a result of the MFD's (whether it be the standard s-500 or z coil). What i found interesting was the Maple board with the semi hollow kind of offset each other tone wise. The little extra brightness usually found with maple seemed to be negated by the warmness of the semi hollow. Certainly an outstanding combination. I didn't have my s-500 with me to do an A/B on the same song, maybe in the future. I did notice that the z-coils seemed to give a very balanced even response all the way from the low E right up the neck. I didn't feel the need to boost volume or turn up even during the solo section which seemed to cut through as clear as the rhythm.
Here is a quick vid from rehearsal last night..... we were short on time and were working on the new Black Keys song "Gold on the Ceiling". Its not perfect, but it is a rehearsal after all!

Quite right. It did sound smooth rolling in and out of the lead. It was effortless. With my AM Standard Telecaster I'd be fiddling with the volume knob frantically. I like the lead tone that you captured here. It is not overly distinctive. But it is nice and clear and competent. I had a comanche once but I bought it to flip. The guy who I sold it to was looking for something to pair up with his PRS to play in his praise band. A Comanche and a PRS with buckers, that sounds like a good combination, especially for that type of music.

You have one very nice Comanche! I"m a Comanche owner myself and LOVE it . It plays like a dream and the sounds well, you already know! Good Luck with her!

Maybe something showing the range of tones you can coax out of that beauty?

i second that. maybe a video that is not in the band setting, but just the guitar, going through the different sounds.

Man, now i am under pressure.... Mark my words, i will get around to it someday soon. The new tubes for my Dr Z should be here next week, once i get it in tip top shape I'll sit down with the Comanche.
