material for guitar rack question

I am building a rack to hold up to 6 guitars. The design is fairly simple, using dowel rods for the supports the body of the guitars will rest on. I am thinking of using standard foam pipe insulation as a cover for the dowels. Would this be compatible with most guitar finishes? Suggestions?

It seems like poly finishes aren't particularly sensitive, but nitro melts if you look at it wrong.

If you use pipe insulation, maybe you can wrap it in some kind of fabric, like the mouse fur inside a hard case. That would look nice, and could be more protective of a delicate finish.

YMMV but I've specifically heard of Nitro finishes not tolerating foam very well.

Agree with Horse, go with mouse fur - maybe even an undyed wooly cotton - if you have nitro and want to be very very sure.

I am not familiar with 'mouse fur'. Is that the actual name of the material? Could I source it at a fabric shop?
What about using felt?
