Amp Stands

I’m thinking about buying an amp stand.
I play through a small Mesa Subway Blues – similar in size to a Fender Princeton.
Sometimes I stack it on top of a Thiele cabinet.

For the other times that I use it alone, I would like to be able to point it more toward my ears rather than my legs.

In shopping for stands I find many variations. Some don’t really lift the amp far off the floor – ranging from a simple wedge, to fold up metal stands that merely tilt the amp back. Then there are the larger stands that not only tilt the amp but can lift it off the floor to a significant degree.

How many here use amp stands and can offer pros and cons of the various designs?

I have a Carvin amp stand and it's adjustable maybe 4 inches , I haven't had any other amp stands to compare too but this one and can't think of any down side

I use a similar pair of stands as Fumble is using to lift 2 Mesa Thiele cabs of the ground in my rack gear:


These stands are available under a number of brand names but I believe them all to be identical.

For wedge-type monitoring, I'm using this guitar stand to tilt back my Fuchs combo : http://produkte.k-m.de/media/images/pro ... 014-55.jpg
It just happens to fit perfectly to the Fuchs in that it sort of 'locks in' to the back panel, perfectly stable. Also it's not bulky and fits into the open back cabinet, behind the speaker, again sort of self-blocking itself since the size is just right.
Usually I put this on top of my amp flightcase to get more evelation, with the case lying on the side.
On larger stages I simply put the combo on top of it's flightcase.

I've used an On-Stage RS7500 for quite a few years now. No complaints. It's sturdy, lifts the amp off the floor, and tilts it back plenty far enough (the tilt angle is adjustable). Also, if you haul (or store) a lot of gear, you'll appreciate its relative compactness when folded up.

Jos -- Quite an impressive rig there. What I've been trying to determine is if those stands you have for the Thiele cabs are better than the simple tilt back floor stands.

GDub -- It's good to hear that your "tri-pod" style stand has been durable. I was going to dismiss that style as I assumed that it wouldn't hold up as well as the others -- they seem to be less expensive also.

For years, mesa sold a telescopic tilt leg in their store. You would mount one end to the top of your amp on the back and then you could tilt the thing to any desired angle. Haven't seen them for a while now and they are hard to find online too.

I have a rubber pad (removed from the bottom of an effects pedal) stapled to the back edges of my amps so that I can lean them back against something without them slipping out from underneath. For extra height place amp on chair, works a treat.

I prefer ye olde milk crate(s) for amp elevation. They double as loose equip/cord carriers for gigs!

I use one of these. It works great and I have had it for years

I also have an On Stage stand like GDub, It came with an amp I bought and it works I guess. Sound is pointed more directly at you, and everything is at a slightly better viewing angle.

Like he said, it folds up pretty small in comparison to some of these other big daddy stands. It also has the threaded post to make micing up a bit easier too, if you're into that sort of thing.
